Microsoft Outlook 98 Spam Filter
1. Open the Rules Wizard Window
- With Outlook 98 open click once on the Organize button in the toolbar.
- The Ways to Organize Local screen should now appear in the right pane.
- Click once on Using Folders to show the Rules Wizard... option in the upper right.
- Click once on Rules Wizard.. to open the Rules Wizard window.
2. Rules Wizard
- Click the New button.
3. Rule Type
- Select the Check messages when they arrive option.
- Click Next.
4. Conditions
- In the condition(s) box check the with specific words in the subject option.
- "with specific words in the subject" will be added to the Rulde description box.
- Click the specific words link in the Rules description box.
5. Search Text Window
- Type the words or phrases you would like to filter in the Add new: field.
These will vary depending on the type of spam email you typically receive - Click the Add button.
- The words or phrases you typed should now appear in the Search List box.
- Click OK to return to the Rules Wizard.
6. What to do with Message
- Check the move it to the specified folder option.
While you may be tempted to check delete it we recommend against this as it is possible legitimate mail will sometimes be filtered. - "move it to the specified folder" should now appear in the Rules description box.
- Click the specified link in the Rules description box.
7. Select a Folder
- Click the New... button to open the Create New Folder window.
- In the Name field type Spam as the name of your new folder.
- Select the folder that will be the parent of your new folder.
This will typically be your main account (yourname@yourdomain.com) - Click OK to return to the Rules Wizard.
8. Exceptions (optional)
- You may add any exceptions to the rule if you would like, though we recommend against this.
- The procedure to add exceptions is similar to the previous steps.
- Verify the information in the Rules description box and click Next.
9. Name Your New Rule
- Type a descriptive name for your new rule in the specify a name field.
- Make sure Turn on this rule is checked.
- Once again verify the information in the Rules description box and click Finsh.
9. Finish
- Your new rule should be displayed in the top box. Make sure it is checked.
- In the future you can modify this rule by selecting it and clicking on the Modify... button
- One last time verify the information in the Rules description box and click OK to exit the Rules Wizard.
Congratulations
You have now successfully added a new rule to filter your email. You may add more rules depending on the amount and type of spam you receive. We recommended checking the Spam folder you created periodically to retrieve legitimate emails that have been mistakenly filtered based on the rules you have applied.
