Netscape Communicator Spam Filter
1. Open the Message Filter Window
- With Netscape Communicator open click once on the Edit menu to open its submenu.
- Mouseover Message Filters... and click once to open the Message Filters window.
2. Message Filter Window
- Select your email account from the "Filters for" dropdown list.
- Click the New button to open the Filter Rules window.
3. Filter Rules Window
- Type a descriptive name for your new filter in the Filter Name field.
- Check the radio button for "any of the following".
Checking "all of the following" will filter less spam. - From the 2 dropdown lists in the window boc select Subject and contains.
- Type a word you want to filter in the text box.
These will vary depending on the type of spam you typically receive. - You can add more words to filter by clicking the more button below the window box.
Remember to set the dropdown lists for each new word you add to the filter. - In the Perform this action section select Move to folder in the first dropdown list.
While you may be tempted to select Delete the messages we recommend against this as it is possible legitimate mail will sometimes be filtered. - Select your email account in the second dropdown list.
- Click the New folder... button to open the New Folder window.
4. New Folder Window
- Type Spam in the Name field.
- Click the button Click here to select.
- Mouseover your email account to open its submenu.
- Mouseover choose this for the parent and click once to return to the Filter Rules Window.
5. Verify
- Verify the information on the Filter Rules Window.
(Note that the second dropdown list under Perform this action now says Spam on your email.) - Click Ok to return to the Message Filters window.
6. Finish
- Verify the information on the Message Filters window.
- Your email account should be selected in the dropdown list.
- Your new rule should be listed in the window box.
- Make sure your rule is checked to enable it.
- Click OK to close the Message Filter window.
Congratulations
You have now successfully added a new rule to filter your email. You may add more rules depending on the amount and type of spam you receive. We recommended checking the Spam folder you created periodically to retrieve legitimate emails that have been mistakenly filtered based on the rules you have applied.
